Local Gas Production

April 20, 2006 at 11:52 am

With continual news of imported gas and depleting supplies it is positive news to hear that Shell has began production from a field off the Norfolk Coast.

This small but innovative and environmentally-sustainable development will be powered by solar and wind energy. It is expected that approximately 3 million cubic metres of gas will be produced a day for the next 15 years from the Cutter field.

LNG Shipped to UK by Gazprom

April 14, 2006 at 11:15 am

140,000 cubic meters of LNG was delivered to the UK from France last week by Russian gas giant Gazprom. Gazprom supplies a quarter of Europe’s gas and this was its first delivery of LNG to the UK.

LNG is gas which is cooled to liquid. In this form it can be transported in pressurised tankers across larger distances without relying on pipelines.

The shipment was the largest yet received by BP at the Isle of Grain terminal in Kent. Regular deliveries can now be expected as it is thought that LNG could make up a quarter of UK gas supplies by 2010.

Clean Coal the Way Forward?

April 12, 2006 at 10:13 am

Npower is currently looking into plans for a ‘clean coal’ power plant. This type of energy generation uses chemical processes to remove and contain carbon dioxide so that less is released into the atmosphere, reducing emmsions by up to 90% a year.

The plant, which is being looked at in a feasibility study by npower at present could be developed by 2016. This is part of RWE npower’s commitment to invest in low C02 emitting energy generation, other options include wind power and ‘combined cycle’ gas fired power stations (which utilise the waste heat from the gas turbine to make steam to generate additional electricity).

As well as helping to meet environmental targets by reducing emissions, ‘clean coal’ generation could also help to reduce household bills, making us less dependent on dwindling gas supplies. This is a high priority after continual price rises over the last year and continued concern over the countries gas stores.
